Holiday Cooking: Preventing Kitchen Sink Clogs

Q: I am going to be cooking for 12 people over the holidays. If I get a clog in my sink while I'm preparing the meal, it's going to create a major problem. How I can I prevent this from happening?
A: To prevent kitchen-sink clogs (and any last-minute orders for take-out), avoid pouring grease or oil down your drain. This can be especially important for holiday cooking—dishes such as turkey, duck or ham tend to create a lot of excess fat. Instead, pour grease into a sealable container, and then throw the sealed container in the trash. Otherwise, grease can stick to the inside of your pipes and eventually create problems.
You should also avoid letting large food scraps go down the drain, especially if you don't have a garbage disposal. Use a drain strainer in your sink to prevent this from happening.
If you do end up with a clog, don't panic. You can use a clog-removing product such as Drano® Kitchen Crystals or Drano® Max Gel Clog Remover. Both products work fast to restore your drains to their free-flowing state. Just keep in mind that Drano® Kitchen Crystals is not recommended for sinks with garbage disposals because of the heat it creates inside your drain and the potential for splash-back of hot water when you turn your disposal on.
By following the easy steps above, you can enjoy your holiday meals without a hitch.
