Q: I know Drano® has a few types of drain openers, but I don't understand how they're different from one another. Can you help?
A: This is a question we get a lot, as Drano® makes five different products—four of which are designed to unclog drains, and a fifth that's designed to prevent clogged drains. We know this can make things a little confusing, but don't despair—we're here to help!
Although Drano® products seem similar, each product works in a unique way. Depending on the type of clog you have and the location of that clog in your home, one Drano® product is probably better suited for you than the others. Here's a breakdown of how each product works and the types of clogs it works best on—along with a little Drano® history.
Drano® Max Gel
Use it when you have standing water that doesn't clear for several hours or when you need to break up a particularly tough clog. Drano® Max Gel is thick and heavy, so it pours through standing water straight to the clog. It's excellent at removing hair, soap scum and other gunky clogs.

Drano® Kitchen Crystals
Use it in your kitchen sink when you have a partially clogged, slow-running drain (if you don't have a garbage disposal*). Kitchen sink clogs are often caused by a buildup of grease. When this product mixes with water, it creates heat that melts and breaks down greasy clogs.
Use it in your:
*Drano® Kitchen Crystals should not be used with garbage disposals because of the heat it creates inside your drain. When you turn on your disposal, splash-back of hot water could occur.
